Give Your Heart Some Love

It seems that everyone is thinking about Valentine. Children are busy writing their Valentine cards, bring in their treats to school, and have a little party of exchanging sweets. Adults are planning a more elaborate celebration with their lovers.

For me, I am thinking about my heart! Growing old is not fun, so taking care of the most important engine in my body is imperative! February is heart-month, right? So why not give your heart the love and respect it deserves?

It's said that deaths from cardiovascular events increase during the winter months. These factors should be taken into consideration, such as respiratory infections, exertion from shoveling, and exposure to extreme weather, since they can contribute to a negative impact on your heart.

Be Smart When You Go Outside
  • Dress in layers, and wear hat, mittens, and thick socks
  • If you have to shovel the snow, clear one small area at a time, and take breaks
  • Avoid walking on heavy and wet snow
  • Go inside immediately if your heart is racing, or have chest pain, or feel faint. Call the doctor after five minutes if the symptoms exist

Be Kind to Your Heart
  • Quit smoking is the best strategy to prevent heart disease.
  • Eat heart-healthy foods, low in saturated fat, sodium, low-fat or nonfat dairy products.
  • Eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and lean meats.
  • Exercise, even if it is just a brisk walk to strengthen your heart muscle
  • Lose weight since the extra weight is hard on your heart
  • Have your blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose checked regularly
  • Manage your high blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes
Celebrate Valentine! Celebrate your heart!

  3. Diane C.--It's just a commercial holiday, or Hallmark tradition to boost their sales! Maybe we should turn Valentine's Day celebration into Heart Awareness Day instead! :-)
